We weren't in any hurry this morning, and left the apartment about 11:30. We noted on the way that the big carry-the -laptop handbag that I'd got from the op-shop and which was losing one of its handles had been taken from the scaffolding where I had hooked it yesterday morning. There are a lot of African people around here, selling stuff or begging, so I hope one of them took it, and it will be useful if only for a while.
Our last train trip from Naples to Rome in 2000 was a complete disaster, with us in separate carriages, David having to stand for the 3hr journey while all the 1st class compartments in his carriage were locked shut, and I sat on the step facing the door and looking out, but everyone had to reshuffle when anyone needed the toilet because a passenger had claimed it as a seat. This time, in Business class, we were in air/cond comfort at up to 291kph so it took only 1hr 7min.
Good bye Vesuvius
We had lunch at the station, then got a cab. The woman only took us part way, then said the road was too narrow and wouldn't go any more, so we had to walk the rest of the way, dodging taxis coming through behind us. Our host came to let us in, and we enjoyed the evaporative coolers for a bit.
We went to the supermarket, but it was still early, so we decided to go out.
A very hairy building near the supermarket
We are just one station away from the Colosseum, so we went there, intending to go the the Roman Forum again, and have a better look than on the rushed visit in 2000.
But it is now all fenced off, and you have to pay to go in, and go through bag x-ray machines, so we declined that, and walked up the adjacent Palatine Hill and looked through the wire.
When we came back down, we circumambulated the Colosso, and caught the train back one station.
