We got to Bucharest at about 6:30, and hung about the
station for a while, filling in time with some breakfast at Mcd until it was
appropriate to go to our hostel nearby. We
left our bags, and followed instructions to buy a bus ticket to town.
We found our ‘free’ walking tour near the big
city fountain,
and followed our guide around the streets of the old town,
hearing about history from Vlad the Impaler to the revolution that
ended Ceaucescau’s rule. The walk finished in University Plaza.
The Palace of the Deposits and Consignments
Just as we came
to the last stop, we saw some beautiful onion domes down a side street, and later
went back a little way, but couldn’t find them.
We got some rolls for lunch and sat in a little park at the Plaza opposite crosses marking the death site of some of the young
revolutionaries , then headed back to the art gallery, where we looked at
European art for a couple of hours.
We
still didn’t find the golden onions, so we walked through Cismigiu Park, had
icecream, and caught a trolley bus back home.
We got out one stop before we should have, so had a long walk to a huge supermarket, then went home and
cooked dinner.
