Day 77 - Friday 19 July - Brussels to Amsterdam

Friday 19 July

The train left at a leisurely 9:45, going north via Antwerp then to Breda, just over the border. We were on the left hand side of the train to be out of the morning sun. Just before Breda we (apparently) turned 90deg and came in from the west. They disconnected the Belgian engine and put the Dutch one on because we felt the bumps.  But when we started, we pulled out of the station the opposite direction to the way we came in, and we were on the right hand side of the train, but we were still going north. Did that ever do terrible things to our still muddled senses of direction. You'd think after 10 weeks we'd know which way is up, but we don't at all.

Wind turbines within the port.  What a good idea.

Rotterdam station

So we got to Amsterdam at about 12:40, and found out about the discount passes I'd paid for on-line, and got early check in at our bnb. I am a bit cross about this (and have always had suspicions).  On the receipt is says apartment, but we have only a bedroom with tea-making facilities.  There is a kitchen, with washing machine, but notices saying these are reserved for some guests, but not others, and we were told we were not included.  It already is expensive, and this is going to add to the costs.

 The Western Church

At about 15:45 we were waiting for our entry to Ann Frank's House museum. We had a 30min illustrated talk first, then did our guided tour with headsets. We finished at 19:00.

The pictures illustrating Ann's life and times.

A cut-way drawing of the front house and back store house, which is where the Secret Annexe was.

An illegal photo - the original bookcase which hid the entrance to the annexe.

We found some dinner on the way home, and spent the evening trying to work out what we will do for the next 3 days.
