Day 61 - Wednesday 3 July - Barcelona (blue and red routes)

Wednesday 3 July

This morning I looked at the website for the Sagrada Familia, Gaudi's famous basilica, which I had not done before, and we caught the train to go in person to see what was the set-up about getting tickets. To my surprise, even though there is a building marked 'ticket office', I found that they only sell on-line, that the tower visits are so booked ahead it doesn't matter, that the only guided tours in Eng this week were 2 individuals at 2 diff times, and so we booked 2 audio tours for tomorrow. And already I am warming to the place. I thought I wouldn't like it, like I can't stand Picasso, but it has some nice things on the outside, and I'm looking forward to seeing it inside as well.

 The Passion facade

Then we hiked across country to the flea market, in a nice new purpose built arena.  I bought no fleas, again, but did get some other things at half the first asked price.

We got another train to the main square, and bought 48hr passes for the ho-ho buses. We started with the blue route,

and got off at Guell Park, which has some Gaudi buildings.  It was quite a hike from where the bus dropped us, and it was hot, so we found a shady spot for byo sandwich, and walked around for a bit. We didn't pay to go in to the Gaudi section.

We did some more blue bus, until we got to the route intersection and transferred to the red.

 The magic fountain

A fancy fountain in Placa D'Espanya and the ex bull ring
It took us to Poble Espagnole, which is a recreated village of buildings from all around Spain, with restaurants and crafts (more shopping).   They have a modern art gallery, and we shared some laughs with a USA-accented family whose kids were literally ROFL.

Then we went past the 1992 Olympic stadium, and on to Monjuic  (Jews' mountain), which has a gondola ride to the C11 castle.  So we got off there, and went up and sat by the view and ate cherries.  Then we caught the bus back down again.

By now it was getting close to 20:00, so we found a metro line that went towards our place, and made our way home for a pizza dinner from the supermarket, but had to cook it in the micro, 'cause the oven wouldn't work.
