Day 103 - Wednesday 14 August - Tallinn open-air museum

Wednesday 14 August

This wasn't a big building full of old stuff. It was like the Bucharest outdoor museum - where the houses and other buildings are the museum. It took about 30mins in the local bus to get there, and when I saw that they had bikes to hire, off we went.

Old building in the back, new in the front.

We couldn't follow the geographical references to where the farm buildings came from, but we could appreciate their similarities and differences, especially with the older farms. But what made this one more interesting than Bucharest was that many of these were open for inspection, because it is school holidays, and family groups were there.

The biggest windmill, of about 7 on site.

Some matronly dolls for sale in one house.

City kids were wary, and didn't know how to feed pellets to the sheep.

 The village fire station.

We were there all day. It rained while we were in church, and having lunch in the inn - a 3 course meal which left me very full.

Sauerkraut soup, noodle with meat (finely crumbled mince) and salad, and kissel with curd (thickened fruit juice with yoghurt??).

School rules.  Kids started when they were 9-10, and went 5 days weekly, in winter.  In summer, they had to help in the fields.

The school house, and teacher's residence.

In the church out of the rain.

Out with the blue raincoats.
This wall hanging was one of many on the walls in the tavern.

 Some fancy decorations.

 Farming tools

But by 16:00 we reckon we'd done most, so we got the bus back to the city.
